Yesterday we went on a road trip and stopped for kebabs in Rosebud. On the window of the Kebabs House was a big sign saying they have 'Melbourne's Best Souvlaki as mentioned in the Herald Sun.' The date of that award was January 2010. A lot must have changed in the last 16 months. Unfortunately, to explain my lamb kebab ($7.50) as disappointing is a bit of an understatement. 

• The main disappointment and a real frustration for me was the lamb. They didn't use 'real' lamb, it was processed
• There was only a tiny sprinkling of salad
• The kebab was served in what looked a lot like a hot dog bun. I think the bread was probably made on site but isn't the type of wrap you would associate with a kebab

T enjoyed his kebab so at least one of us was satisfied.

We also ordered an egg salad ($4.50) which was very fresh. In addition to the egg, there was onion and plenty of parsley.

While you wait for your food to be prepared there are plenty of new magazines to read through which was a little treat. The shop was very clean and the staff were polite.

Parkmore Charcoal Chicken for Dinner

We have visited this store a number of times and have always really enjoyed their charcoal cooked lamb on the spit but not this time!! The lamb was REALLY fatty. Usually it is a little crunchy on the outside and perfectly cooked with minimal fat. 
T ordered Gyros, chips and salad (lamb, chips and egg salad) $11.80.

I ordered a small serving of lamb ($6) and a small coleslaw ($3.20). They came in the same sized container.

While the lamb was a big let down, the chips and salads were decent.
We will probably head back to Parkmore Charcoal Chicken store in the hope that they have returned to their former high standards, but if we have an experience like this again, it will be for the last time.

Roast Chicken and Vegetables

On Saturday night I had no meat in the fridge but felt like eating a wholesome home style meal so I asked T to buy a roasted chicken while I prepared some vegetables in the oven.
He bought the cooked chook from My Chickadee, 144 Balcombe Rd, Mentone for $12.50. It was one of the nicest chicken I have ever tasted!

My roasted vegetables complemented the meat nicely and we had a lovely meal with minimal effort.

Take-away from Golden Star, Bendigo

I'd been wanting to have some Chinese while in Bendigo so we stopped by Golden Star restaurant for a late take-away dinner. The waitress who took our order was lovely; bubbly and incredibly friendly. I do, however, have to fault her on one thing, her recommendation that I order Mixed Vegetables ($12.80) over Eggplant Braised in Brown Sauce ($13.80). Oh, how I should have chosen the eggplant....

The smell of Chinese wofting through the car as we travelled back to the motel was very tempting.

T ordered Chilli Chicken ($12.80) which was very nice. The chicken was good quality, it came with plenty of vegies and just the right amount of chilli.

The Mixed Vegetables was really bland. The variety of vegetables was good and they were cooked well but seriously lacked flavour. They were so plain that I resorted to pouring over some of the chilli chicken's spare sauce. I didn't eat much.

The small Steamed Rice ($3) was cooked perfectly, though that's not tricky to do.
Unfortunately, my craving for Chinese wasn't exactly satisfied.

Nandos for Dinner

I must admit I have never been a big fan of Nandos but this visit was beyond disappointing and a big waste of money.
This is what we ordered; a Supremo Wrap, Half Chicken and in the small bowl is some sauce from our jar of Hot Perinaise. The total cost of our meal was a few cents short of $30.

I ordered a Supremo Wrap ($8.10), the menu said it consisted of a wholemeal wrap with marinated & basted tenderloins, mixed lettuce, tomato, sweet chilli PERi-PERi sauce & light cream cheese. I tasted the cream cheese in only 2 of my bites and when I opened the wrap to look inside, I could hardly see any.

The chicken was minimal too. To the right of this wrap you can see a tiny strip of chicken. As well as some of the more important ingredients barely being seen, a few of the lettuce leaves were slimey.

T had his usual half chicken with chips in a meal ($16.10). He commented that the half chicken must have been from a very small bird, he was left hungry and unimpressed too.

The interior of the 'restaurant' was nice but there was a subtle, unpleasant smell in part of the eating area.

The only positives were the clean, well decorated interior and the man at the counter who took our order. Needless to say, we will not be going back to this store!

Dinner from Souvlaki House, Oakleigh

T had been craving a souvlaki for a few weeks so yesterday we headed to Souvlaki House, a take-away store we often drive past.

When reading the chalk board menu I was pleasantly surprised to see they serve souvlakis in small as well as regular size.
I ordered a small lamb souvlaki ($8) minus the onion. The bread was lightly grilled and contained garlic sauce, tomato and lettuce. There was plenty of lettuce which was good because I often find souvlakis lack enough salad (but that may just be me). The lamb was of a decent quality and seasoned with rosemary, amongst other things.

After a few bites.

T had a regular sized mixed; lamb & chicken souvlaki ($10). His had all the same fillings as mine plus extra onion.

T and I agreed that the souvlakis were average; we've had better but we've also had much worse.

Subway for Lunch

Subway is always great for a quick, cheap and healthy meal. Sometimes I get a wrap, sometimes a 6 inch multigrain. My main filling choices are tuna, chicken pieces or, in today's case, a vegie patty. I always have the same salads too, 'everything except onion and jalapeno.' Honey mustard is my dressing of choice but today I also tried some sweet onion, not again though, it was dripping out the bottom of the sub.

It's not very pretty but it hit the spot!
